Preserving Perfection

Expert Guidelines on Caring for Your South Sea Pearls.

Because pearls are organic gems composed of calcium carbonate, they require special care to maintain their radiant luster. While South Sea pearls have exceptionally thick nacre that makes them durable, they are still susceptible to chemicals and abrasive surfaces.

"Last to put on, first to take off."

Essential Care Guidelines

Wearing

  • Always put pearls on after applying makeup, perfume, and hairspray. Chemicals can dull the luster.
  • Avoid wearing pearls while exercising, swimming, or in the shower.
  • Pearls benefit from moisture. Wearing them frequently allows them to absorb natural oils from your skin, keeping them hydrated.

Cleaning

  • Wipe your pearls with a soft, clean, damp cloth after every wear to remove perspiration and oils.
  • Never use ultrasonic cleaners, steam cleaners, or harsh detergents.
  • If a deeper clean is needed, use only a very mild soap, wipe with a damp cloth, and lay flat to dry.

Storing

  • Store pearls separately from other hard jewelry (like diamonds) that can scratch their surface.
  • Store them in a soft cloth pouch or a velvet-lined jewelry box.
  • Do not store them in airtight plastic bags or safes for long periods; pearls need to "breathe" to avoid drying out and cracking.

Maintenance

  • For pearl strands, check the silk cord regularly. It can stretch or weaken over time.
  • Have your pearls restrung every 1 to 2 years depending on frequency of wear.
  • Ensure the jeweler uses silk thread and knots between each pearl to prevent them from rubbing together.
